US President Barack Obama (R) dances with US First Lady Michelle Obama at the Eastern-States Inuagural Ball at Union Station in Washington DC., USA on 20 January 2009. The first anniversary of Obama's inauguration as the 44th President of the United States is 20 January 2010. Obama's election as the first black President of the United States generated massive attention. He was celebrated by a world which expected him to instantly reverse the eight years of unpopular George W Bush. But Obama entered office facing a daunting set of challenges rivaled by only a handful of his predecessors. He inherited the worst economy in decades, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a sullied US image in the world after years of hard-line policies against terrorism, headlined by the Guantanamo Bay prison. A year later, the reality is more sobering: Soaring unemployment, ramped-up troop commitments to Afghanistan, and stalled nuclear talks with Iran and North Korea. Obama failed to keep his promise to close Guantanamo by 22 January 2010, and also disappointed Europe on global warming. He presided over the biggest government bailout of private companies like General Motors in decades. Aside from the hard political issues of the day, Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama created a celebrity frenzy unlike anything since John F. and Jackie Kennedy moved into the White House in 1961. Daughters Malia and Sasha, First Dog Bo and an organic garden on the front lawn have captured popular sentiment. EPA/MARK WILSON / POOL +++(c) dpa - Bildfunk+++
